Allowing Contextual Themes
Importance
Enabling themes for different contexts allows a site's appearance to be customized for an entire category, a specific course, or an individual user.
Location
Site administration ▶ Appearance ▶ Themes ▶ Theme settings
Steps
- Check the box next to the contexts in which theme selection should be allowed.
- Allow user themes: Individual users can select a theme with which they wish to view the site. Users may make this selection in their Profile settings.
- Allow course themes: Teachers may force a theme to display for their individual course from within the Course settings screen.
- Allow category themes: Category managers or site administrators may force a theme to display for all courses within a single category.
- Allow cohort themes: Site administrators may force a theme to display for all users within a cohort.
- Click Save changes to commit the settings to the server.

- Navigate to the settings screen for the contexts that have been enabled.
- For users: User menu ▶ Profile ▶ Edit Profile
- For courses: Course administration ▶ Edit settings
- For categories: Category administration ▶ Edit settings
- For cohorts: Site administration ▶ Users ► Cohorts ► Edit settings
- Verify that a Force theme or Preferred theme option appears on the settings screen.
