One of the concerns about moving to an online-only learning environment is the loss of the social-emotional experience of campus life. This doesn’t have to be the case! In this opening session of our month-long examination of Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) in online education, we will discuss techniques your institution can use to establish an engaging campus experience for your learners.
There is often already a stigma associated with professional training within companies, and as more professional training is moving online out of necessity, delivering the same content via Zoom will not magically lead to successful remote learning. Establishing a community of professional learning starts with engaging online training, but is maintained with ongoing opportunities for sharing, dialog and reflection.
The Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) has defined a widely used framework of competencies for social and emotional learning. The question we’re faced with now is, how do we foster these competencies in an online environment? This session will address that very issue by examining techniques that support the development of self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision making within an online learning context.
Meeting the emotional needs of an online learner begins with recognizing him/her as an individual. This has always been challenging in face-to-face instruction where the instructor’s attention may be split across dozens, if not hundreds, of students in a live class. The asynchronous nature of online learning, coupled with LMS automations that react to a learner’s actions, provides the opportunity to make sure that every learner receives the personalized attention needed to be successful.
